Wikidata Workshop

Event thumbnail
If you use Google Search, you're familiar with the little box that appears on the side of the results page which presents a summary of the information you're searching for. To gather this information, Google pulls data from a variety of sources, among them Wikidata. 'Wiki' might not be a strange sound to you, Wikipedia and Wikidata are definitely related. The main difference between them is that Wikidata is machine-readable, which makes it possible for Google engines to read, "understand", and make use of the information on there. But it also makes really cool projects possible like the timeline of everything – http://histropedia.com
This workshop will introduce Wikidata (www.wikidata.org). We will introduce some of its history, how to contribute to it, query it, and what interesting projects you can do with it. The aim of this workshop is to build a community around Wikidata.
Target audience:
Technical community, university students and professors, journalists, GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums), interested people with a reasonable background in data.
Expected outcome:
• Describe the use of and relate Wikidata to the semantic Web.
• Explain how a Wikidata item is structured.
• Identify the different ways one can contribute to Wikidata: single edits, automatic edits through bots, gamification, etc.
• Query data using the Wikidata query service.
• Apply knowledge acquired in the workshop to create visualizations.
• Express a diversity of data analysis and visualization projects possible with Wikidata.
